NASA or National Aeronautics and Space Administration has announced that it has successfully applied a new technology in flight that allows the aircraft to fold their wings to different angles in the air.
The ability to fold wings in flight has been always dependent on heavy and bulky conventional motors and hydraulic systems which can be cumbersome to the aircraft.
The new span wise adaptive wing project intends to obtain a wide spectrum of aerodynamic benefits in the flight by folding through the use of an innovative lightweight material called shape memory alloy.Supersonic plans would be among the beneficiaries of this new technology.

The project's principal investigator Matt Moe Holt said there is a lot of benefits in folding the wing tips downward to sort of ride the wave in supersonic flight including reduced drag this may result in more efficient supersonic flight.
